The Harlem Renaissance or as white people would say The new Negro Movement, was a time period of great cultural activity and innovation among African American artists and writers, one that saw new artists and landmark works appear in the fields of literature, dance, art, and music. The Harlem Renaissance started in the 1920’s and lasted till the 1930’s. The most lasting contribution of the Harlem Renaissance was the African American literature and Art that came out of this time period. This made African Americans proud of their history and ways of life. They truly believed that “Black is Beautiful.” The other theme of the Harlem Renaissance art and literature was that inner cities were places of poor and injustice toward minority groups. The Harlem Renaissance exposed the problems in the urban area to American in exciting ways. African Americans came up with a new musical genre which is called Jazz and they would play this music in cities which caught Americans attention. White people from wealthier neighborhoods would go out to the cities around the country to have a good night life of Harlem. When Americans went out and did this they called it “Slumming.” Whites did this because they knew they had more cash; illicit businesses sprang up in Harlem. Prostitution, Speakeasies, and cocaine sprang up almost always in Harlem. Americans suffered long term because of these illegal businesses.
